Students at Kildala Elementary received a surprise on Thursday, May 19th, 2011 when a pair of special visitors dropped into their school for a big announcement. Linda Campbell and Eleanor Kendal of the Kitimat Rotary Club were there to announce Kildala had been chosen to be Kitimat’s Peace School.

“I am here on behalf of the Rotary Club of Kitimat. What happened three years ago was our president went to a peace summit in Ontario and she came back very excited because she heard about different things that could happen in a community and one of those things that happen in a Community are Peace Schools,” said Campbell.

In September, information was given to theschools about this project and they were given until the 30th of April to present their projects. Kildala and Saint Anthony’s handed in their projects.

The schools were judged by different activities in the school system and the roles which students take on. This included speech, harmony, getting along, anti-bullying and more. In Rotary, they have a policy of  “Think, say and do”.

“Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it feel good and create better friendships for all concerned? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?” said Campbell. “And that’s something you have up in your school lobby; you have that posted in two hallways within this school.”

Kildala received a “Peace Pole” for their efforts, and a school trip to the swimming pool.
